Joana Vasconcelos was born in Paris in 1971. She currently lives and works in Lisbon. Through large and colourful sculptures and installations, the artist provides a complicit vision, but one which is, at the same time, critical of contemporary society. She updates the arts & crafts concept to the 21st century and incorporates everyday objects with irony and humour, creating a bridge between domestic environment and public space while questioning the status of women, consumerism society and collective identity. She was the first woman, and the youngest artist, to exhibit at the Palace of Versailles, in 2012.
